Build Quality And Design

The Q2 fits inside an Aeropress. That single fact has made it my permanent travel companion for the past eight months. No extra pouch, no awkward packing decisions. It just drops into the plunger chamber and disappears.

At 405g and 4.6cm diameter, it vanishes into a backpack. I've taken this grinder through 14 flights, three camping trips, and countless hotel rooms. The brushed aluminum exterior has picked up a few scratches but nothing that affects function. The faux-wood grip zone still feels solid after all that abuse.

Build quality punches above the $109 price. The threads are precise. The catch cup seals tight. Nothing rattles or wobbles. 1Zpresso clearly optimized for durability here, not just looks.

One thing I appreciate after extended use. The grinder still clicks together with the same precision as day one. No loosening threads, no developing play in the mechanism. For a travel grinder I've genuinely beaten up, that matters.

Grind Adjustment System

The adjustment dial sits beneath the burr, which means removing the lid every time you change settings. I prefer the external systems on the X-Pro and K series. But after eight months, I've memorized my settings. Click 24 for Aeropress. Click 30 for V60. The internal system works fine once you commit the numbers to muscle memory.

Each of the 60 clicks moves the burrs 12.5 microns. I timed my grind sessions across 50+ doses to get real numbers.

Brew Method Dose Grind Time Click Range
Aeropress 15g 22-25 sec 22-26
Pour-over (V60) 20g 28-32 sec 28-32
French Press 20g 20-24 sec 38-42
Espresso 18g 1:50-2:10 10-14

See that espresso time? Nearly two minutes for a single dose. The Q2 can technically grind fine enough for espresso, but I wouldn't recommend it. Your arm will hate you, and the retention climbs past 0.3g at those settings. Stick to filter methods where this grinder actually shines.

Burrs And Grind Performance

The Q2 ships with 38mm conical burrs made from grade 420 stainless steel. 1Zpresso offers two burr geometries. The pentagonal version cuts faster but produces slightly more fines. The heptagonal version takes longer but delivers more uniform particle distribution. My unit came with pentagonal burrs, which explains the quick grind times I recorded.

I ran a natural-process Sidra from MadCap through both my Q2 and a Timemore C2 back-to-back. The Q2 produced a noticeably cleaner cup. Less muddiness, better acidity clarity. The dual bearing system keeps the burrs aligned during grinding, which shows up in the cup.

For filter methods the Q2 punches way above $109. I've brewed everything from a washed Pacamara out of Guatemala to a honey-process Caturra from Costa Rica. Tasting notes come through clearly. The grind consistency stays tight across the entire dose.

One tip from experience. Season the burrs before serious use. Out of the box, the Q2 creates too many fines. Sacrifice two or three doses of cheap beans first. The difference is immediate.

Q2 vs Timemore Chestnut C2

The Q2 and Timemore Chestnut C2 are the two grinders everyone asks about at this price. I've used both daily for months. Here's how they actually compare.

Metric 1Zpresso Q2 Timemore C2
20g pour-over grind time 28-32 sec 22-26 sec
Retention (weighed across 20 doses) 0.1-0.2g 0.2-0.3g
Fits inside Aeropress Yes No
Build quality feel Premium aluminum Good plastic/metal mix

The C2 grinds about 6 seconds faster for filter doses. But the Q2 retains less coffee and feels more premium in the hand. The Aeropress compatibility is the deciding factor for most travelers.

For grind consistency, the Q2 has a slight edge. I ran a honey-process SL-28 from Square Mile through both grinders. The Q2 produced cleaner acidity and better sweetness definition in the V60. The C2 was good but slightly muddier.

If you want espresso capability, neither is ideal. Look at the JX-Pro or X-Pro instead. For travel filter brewing, the Q2 wins. For home use where size doesn't matter, the C2 saves you $30 and grinds faster.

The Bottom Line

"The Q2 is hands down one of the best budget coffee grinders on the market. Its performance rivals many electric grinders at a fraction of the price. For anyone wanting a travel grinder or high-quality hand grinder for filter coffee, this is my favorite option."
