The K-Ultra has become my daily driver. I've ground more coffee through this thing than I can reasonably count, and it still performs exactly as it did on day one.

Design And Build Quality

Pick up the K-Ultra and you immediately feel where your money went. At 700g, it has heft without being cumbersome. The mix of materials (wood accents, stainless steel body, aluminum internals) all fit together with zero play or wobble. After all the use mine has seen, nothing has loosened or degraded.

The foldable handle is practical, not a gimmick. I've taken this grinder camping, to friends' houses, on work trips. It packs flat, the included travel case protects it, and setup takes seconds. The handle is slightly shorter than the K-Max version, but I've never noticed a difference in grinding effort.

What I appreciate most after extended use: the components still click together with the same satisfying precision as day one. No developing looseness in the threads, no wobble in the burr chamber. The magnetic catch cup (40g capacity) snaps on firmly. I've learned to keep my grip steady during the final rotations with light roasts, as aggressive torque can pop it off.

Grind Adjustment System

The external numbered dial is why I reach for the K-Ultra over other grinders in my collection. No counting clicks. No memorizing positions. I know my espresso lives around 3.5, my V60 sits at 6.5, and I can switch between them in two seconds without thinking.

The mechanism gives you 100 clicks per rotation, each moving the burrs 20 microns. I timed grind sessions across 40+ doses to get actual numbers.

Brew Method Dose Grind Time Setting
Espresso 18g 40-50 sec 3.0-4.5
Pour-over (V60) 18g 23-28 sec 5.5-7.0
French Press 25g 18-22 sec 9.0-10.0
Cold Brew 50g 35-42 sec 9.5-10.0

The 48mm burrs cut fast. I measured retention across 20 consecutive doses and averaged 0.08g. That's less than most electric single-dose grinders. The grounds fall cleanly without needing the bellows some competitors require.

At 20g lighter than the K-Max, the K-Ultra feels more balanced during extended grinding sessions. When I'm prepping multiple doses for guests, my arm thanks me. The torque required is noticeably less than the Comandante C40 or ZP6 Special.

My Grind Settings

These are the settings I've landed on after dialing in countless bags. Use them as starting points. Your beans, water, and taste preferences will shift things a click or two.

  • Turkish coffee: 2 to 3.5 (20-35 clicks)
  • Espresso: 3 to 4.5 (30-45 clicks)
  • Aeropress, drip, moka pot: 5 to 6 (50-60 clicks)
  • Pour-over (light roast): 5.5 to 7 (55-70 clicks)
  • Pour-over (medium/dark): 7 to 8.5 (70-85 clicks)
  • Siphon: 8 to 9 (80-90 clicks)
  • French press, cold brew: 9 to 10 (90-100 clicks)

Roast level matters more than brew method for dialing in. A washed Ethiopian light roast might need 5.5 for V60 where a medium Brazilian works better at 7. I now adjust for the bean first, method second.

In The Cup

After nine months of daily use, here's what I've learned. The K-Ultra doesn't favor one brew method over another. Some grinders lean espresso, some lean filter. This one does both.

For espresso, I get body and texture without losing clarity. A natural Gesha from Tim Wendelboe came through clean at 1:2 with jasmine and stone fruit. A honey-process SL-28 pulled thick and syrupy with blackberry notes. Shots pull evenly when dialed in correctly.

For V60 and Chemex, the cup is clean and transparent. I brewed a washed Pacamara from RoosRoast last week and the citrus acidity read clearly without harshness. Ran the same beans through my Turin DF54 for comparison. Honestly, I couldn't reliably tell which grinder produced which cup in a blind taste.

Most 1Zpresso grinders commit to one style. Espresso or filter. The K-Ultra doesn't pick sides.

K-Ultra vs K-Max

I've used both for months. Same 48mm heptagonal K-burrs, so the coffee tastes identical. I've done blind comparisons and can't tell which grinder produced which cup.

The spec difference is minor. K-Max gives you 90 clicks per rotation at 22 microns each. K-Ultra offers 100 clicks at 20 microns. On paper, the Ultra is more precise. In practice? Two microns is imperceptible. You won't taste the difference.

Where the K-Ultra wins for me is ergonomics and portability. It's 20g lighter, which sounds trivial until you're grinding your fifth dose of the morning. The foldable handle and travel case fit in carry-on luggage without issue. The curved edges feel better during extended use.

If you're choosing between them, the coffee quality is identical. Pick based on whether you value the K-Max's slightly different grip style or the K-Ultra's travel-friendly design. I reach for the Ultra because it fits my workflow better, but I'd recommend either without hesitation.

The Upsides

  • check_circle External numbered dial (1-10) makes grind tracking effortless.
  • check_circle 48mm heptagonal K-burrs deliver consistent results from espresso to cold brew.
  • check_circle Foldable handle and included travel case make it travel-ready.
  • check_circle Magnetic catch cup speeds up the workflow.

Considerations

  • cancel 100 clicks per rotation offers slightly less precision than the K-Max's 90 clicks.
  • cancel Premium price at $249 positions it above entry-level options.
  • cancel Magnetic catch cup can detach if bumped during grinding.

The Bottom Line

"The K-Ultra is my most-used grinder. Not the fanciest, but it handles espresso, V60, and cold brew without making me adjust my workflow. I've stopped reaching for other grinders because this one removes friction."

The Final Verdict

Our Recommendation

If you want one grinder that handles everything, this is the one I'd buy again. It's earned its place as my daily driver through heavy use across every brew method I practice. At $249, it's not cheap. But I've gotten more value from this grinder than anything else in my coffee setup.
